Common Embossing Terminology

Below is common terminology used by the collecting hobby to describe the different aspects of embossings found on insulators. Only specific terms found on Hemingray insulators are described here.

(Dome) Embossed on the very top of the insulator.
(F-Crown)
(R-Crown)
Front Crown, Rear Crown.
Embossing is above the wire groove(s).
(F-Skirt)
(R-Skirt)
Front Skirt, Rear Skirt.
Embossing is below the wire groove(s).
(F-Umbrella)
(R-Umbrella)
Front Umbrella, Rear Umbrella.
Embossing is located on the Umbrella.
Used mainly with transposition styles.
/ Indicates a new line of embossing.
{MLOB} Mold Line Over Base. The mold line continues under the insulator and meets at the inner edge of the skirt. Usually found on some earlier Hemingray insulators.
['...' blotted out] Indicates a blot-out (a spot where an embossing was originally, but was later removed from the mold and filled in, often leaving a tell-tale rough spot in its place.)
