As you probably know by now, I love embossing errors! This particular piece is embossed PATENT EC. 19 1871 (should be DEC.) Whoever was engraving this forgot to finish the job. Apart from the occasional backwards letter, it's fairly unusual to find embossing errors on Hemingray's earliest pieces (those embossed only with the December Patent date).
