This oddity is one of the rare experimental styles based off a modified mold of CD 162. This specimen has an open top and collar. This unique design was patented January 8, 1946 by Alwin G. Steinmayer as a "Spark Gap Insulator" (see related patent). There were two others in this experimental "family": the CD 186 and CD 186.2
